Your Site Is Fast. It's Also Confusing. RUM Won't Tell You.
Real User Monitoring measures how fast pages load for real users. A page can have perfect Core Web Vitals and a confusion score of 78. Fast to load, confusing to use are different problems.
Real User Monitoring is performance measurement from real users' browsers. LCP, INP, CLS, TTFB: the metrics that determine whether your page loads fast enough for the people actually using it, on their actual devices and connections. Datadog, New Relic, SpeedCurve, and Cloudflare all have RUM products.
It's a different category than UX monitoring. The distinction matters because teams often have RUM and assume it covers the UX monitoring need. It doesn't. They're measuring different things.
What RUM measures
RUM passively collects performance data as real users load your pages. It answers: how long does this page take to load for actual users, broken down by geography, device type, network speed, and browser? When did load times degrade? Did a deploy cause a regression in Core Web Vitals?
The metrics are technical. Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) measures how long until the largest visible element loads. Interaction to Next Paint (INP) measures how fast the page responds to user input. Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) measures how much the page layout moves during load.
All three are legitimate performance concerns with real user impact. Google uses Core Web Vitals in search ranking. Load time correlates with bounce rate: pages loading in 1 second convert at roughly 3x the rate of pages loading in 5 seconds. RUM is worth running.
What RUM doesn't measure
RUM stops at the page load. Once the page is fully rendered and responding to input, RUM's job is done.
What happens after that is the user's experience with the interface: do they find what they're looking for, do the interactions work as expected, do they end up in confusion loops, do they rage click elements that aren't responding?
None of those behaviors affect Core Web Vitals. A checkout button that's fully interactive from an INP standpoint (responds in under 200ms) can still generate 40 rage clicks if it's not doing what users expect it to do. RUM sees a fast button. Behavioral monitoring sees a broken button.
The gap is significant. A page can pass every Core Web Vitals threshold with room to spare and score 74 on the confusion score. Fast to load, confusing to use. Two separate dimensions of quality that RUM captures the first one but not the second.
The performance vs. experience split
Performance: does the page load fast and respond to input quickly?
Experience: can users do what they came to do?
Both matter. They're measured differently.
Performance regressions tend to be sudden and obvious: a deploy with a large bundle, an image format change, a third-party script that started timing out. RUM surfaces these with clear before/after data.
Experience regressions are subtler. A navigation item that moved. A button label that no longer matches what users expect. A form field that added a validation rule without a helpful error message. These don't affect load times. They don't affect INP. They show up as dead clicks, form hesitation, and confusion score spikes in behavioral monitoring.
What good coverage looks like
RUM for performance quality. Confusion monitoring for experience quality. Both run in production, both alerting on regressions.
The overlap is thin. RUM alerts when LCP degrades above 2.5 seconds. Confusion monitoring alerts when a page's behavioral signals cross a threshold. A deploy could trigger both (slow and confusing), one (fast but confusing, or slow but clear), or neither (fast and clear). Both alerts are useful. Neither substitutes for the other.
Synthetic monitoring adds a third dimension: scheduled performance checks in controlled conditions, useful for catching regressions before real user data accumulates. That's outside UX monitoring's scope but worth mentioning for teams building out an observability stack.
The SEO angle
Google's Core Web Vitals are a ranking factor. Poor LCP and CLS scores can suppress organic rankings. RUM is how you track whether your pages are meeting the thresholds in field conditions (not just in Lighthouse, which runs in controlled conditions).
High confusion on a page that's ranking well is still worth fixing. Organic traffic that lands on a confusing page bounces, which increases your bounce rate signal over time. The conversion ROI of fixing confusion applies to organic traffic the same as paid traffic.
RUM protects your rankings. Behavioral monitoring protects your conversion rate from the traffic those rankings deliver. They work together, not instead of each other.
