E-Commerce UX Problems That Analytics Won't Surface
Global checkout abandonment averages 70.19%, higher on mobile at 80%. Analytics tells you how many people abandoned. Behavioral monitoring tells you which element caused it.
The Baymard Institute aggregates checkout abandonment data from 50 separate studies. Their September 2025 figure: 70.22% average abandonment. On mobile, it's 80.02%.
Those numbers are often cited as benchmarks to accept. "Industry average is 70%, we're at 68%, we're above average." But the benchmark hides the diagnosis. Why are 70 out of every 100 users who reach checkout not finishing?
The most common answer Baymard gets from users: unexpected extra costs (shipping, taxes, fees) at 48%. That's an information architecture problem. The other 52% of abandonment comes from friction in the checkout flow itself. Confusion, friction, failed interactions.
Analytics measures the 70%. Behavioral monitoring measures the why.
The two types of abandonment
Cart abandonment (leaving before entering checkout) and checkout abandonment (leaving after starting checkout) are different problems with different causes.
Cart abandonment is usually an intent problem. The user wasn't ready to buy, was comparison shopping, or got distracted. That's harder to fix with UX changes.
Checkout abandonment is almost always a friction problem. The user decided to buy, started the process, and something stopped them. Dead clicks on a non-responsive payment button. A promo code field that accepts the code but silently rejects it without error messaging. A billing address form that requires a state field even for international addresses where states don't apply.
These are fixable. Every one of them. But you have to know which element is causing the friction before you can fix it.
Where checkout confusion concentrates
Element attribution in checkout flows consistently shows friction concentrating in a few predictable places.
The promo code field. Users who have a code enter it, it doesn't apply correctly, they can't tell if it worked, they rage-click the "Apply" button trying to confirm. The confusion score on this element can be high even when the field is technically working, because the success state is visually ambiguous.
The payment method selector. On mobile especially, the tap targets for credit card vs. PayPal vs. Apple Pay are often too small, causing tap miss signals that indicate failed selections. The user thinks they selected PayPal. The form is still showing credit card fields.
The address autocomplete. Users type the first few characters of their address, the autocomplete dropdown appears, they select their address, and the city/state/zip fields either don't populate or populate with the wrong values. They don't notice until validation fires at submission. Then they're debugging a form they thought was complete.
Each of these creates a specific signal pattern. Promo code confusion: rage clicks on the Apply button, form hesitation on the order total. Payment method issues: tap misses, loop navigation back to cart. Address autocomplete: error recovery failure signals after submission attempts.
Mobile checkout deserves its own threshold
Mobile checkout abandonment at 80% (vs. 66% on desktop) isn't just because mobile screens are smaller. It's because checkout flows built primarily for desktop are full of mobile-hostile patterns: hover states that mean nothing on touch, multi-column layouts that break, tap targets below the 44x44px minimum, keyboard dismiss behavior that hides form fields behind the virtual keyboard.
The mobile-specific signals in the confusion score track six behaviors that don't exist on desktop: pinch-zoom frustration (user zoomed in trying to see or tap something), tap miss (tapped near but not on a target), swipe miss (attempted horizontal swipe that registered as scroll), orientation thrash (rotated device multiple times in quick succession), double-tap zoom (default browser behavior, indicates text is too small), and keyboard dismissal thrash (dismissed keyboard, immediately reopened it, repeated).
A checkout flow that scores 22 on desktop and 71 on mobile has a mobile-specific UX problem. That's not the same as "it works on mobile." The experience is breaking specifically for touch users.
The order confirmation page
One often-missed page: order confirmation. Users who reach confirmation are done converting, but the experience there affects return purchase rate and referrals.
High confusion on an order confirmation page (usually from form hesitation on account creation prompts or unclear "track your order" flows) doesn't cost the immediate conversion. It costs the relationship.
A confusion score above 55 on the confirmation page is worth investigating even though it won't show up in checkout abandonment analytics. The users who reached it converted. The friction they encountered after converting affects whether they come back.
What to monitor
Set per-page confusion score alerts for your checkout flow with tighter thresholds than the rest of the site. Cart: alert at 60. Checkout step 1: alert at 55. Payment: alert at 50. Confirmation: alert at 60.
Tighter thresholds on revenue-critical pages mean you catch problems faster. A 5-point confusion increase on a checkout step that handles $40K/day in transactions is more urgent than a 15-point increase on a blog post.
Deploy correlation should be configured for every checkout deploy. Third-party checkout integrations ship updates on their own schedule; a payment SDK update can change the checkout experience without your code changing. The correlation alert catches these even when the regression didn't come from your codebase.
